When I first dropped down from teaching upper stages into the weird and wonderful world of lower stages teaching I was completely lost. The most confusing part was teaching Phonics. It genuinely felt like my colleagues were speaking a different language.
“They need to work on their blending and tricky word walls.” Huh?
“He’s still reading CVC words.” Yep…gotcha…
“You’ll need to check their understanding of Phase 2 phonics sounds.” Of course…I knew that…
My problems boiled down to these three big issues:
- I wasn’t sure what to teach next because I had no starting point or framework to work from.
- I had some kids that could read fluently and others who couldn’t name a sound if it slapped them in the face. How did I differentiate for that??
- I couldn’t even tell you how I should teach each sound! How do you even do that?!
